Hi everybody, we’re back with another AWESOME TOP 5 blog post for you all and this week we have decided to tackle SMALL AGM leisure batteries.


By small we mean around 100ah (give or take) because this is a very common sized leisure battery that a lot of people will be using.


This size battery is perfect for most campers, van conversions, off grid systems, caravans etc either as a single battery for small simple applications or multiple batteries joined together in parallel to firm a bigger battery bank.


WHY CHOOSE AN AGM BATTERY?


There are a few types options on the market when it comes to leisure batteries some are really cheap like flooded batteries and on the other hand some are really expensive like lithium (LiFePO4) but AGM are somewhere in the middle and probably the best choice for most van builds.


  • They are sealed so you can keep them inside the van as they are not going to let off any dangerous fumes into the air and they don't have to be positioned upright.


  • They are also slightly lighter the flooded lead acid batteries for those of you concerned with saving a few KG’s of weight.


  • They have a longer life span than the cheaper lead acid batteries, when looked after correctly and charged correctly they will last you a lot longer than lead acid batteries.


  • They are 100% maintenance free so no need to check their levels or top them up.

Our first option this week is our AWESOME BUDGET OPTION by platinum. Platinum batteries are always good quality at a decent price and their AGM battery is pretty good all round for the price and a very good option for anybody wanting to make the move up from lead acid batteries on a budget.


This battery is 100Ah so each battery will give you 50ah of useable power per day when discharged to its recommended 50%. We cant find a maximum charge rate for this battery anywhere so it should work with any B2B chargers, solar MPPT charger or onboard battery charger.

4. PHOTONIC UNIVERSE AGM DEEP CYCLE 100AH


Our next option is another budget option but still pretty awesome and that is the Photonic universe 100Ah AGM battery.


These batteries are top quality and really well made and have a shelf life of 3-5 years however they state that when looked after correctly they should last 6-8 years and that is a long time for a battery.


As this battery is 110Ah that means it will give you 55Ah of useable power


These batteries have a maximum charge rate of 25 amps so will work well with 20 amp B2B chargers or 20 amp Solar charge controllers...

3. VICTRON ENERGY AGM DEEP CYCLE 110AH


At number three on this weeks list is one of the biggest makes in awesome off grid equipment and that is the Victron energy 110Ah deep cycle battery.


Victron make some awesome equipment in general and when it comes to batteries they are up there with some of the best, this battery comes with M8 insert terminals so connecting things up couldn't be easier without the need for extra battery terminals.


These batteries have a maximum charging rate of 30 amps so work well with the awesome 30 amp B2B chargers from Sterling & Renogy and MPPT solar charge controllers up to 30 amp

2. TROJAN BATTERY AGM DEEP CYLCE 100AH


This weeks 2nd place goes to a titan of battery technology and one of the best battery makes on the market, when it comes down to batteries Trojan really know their stuff.


These batteries might be the same size and look pretty similar to every other leisure battery you have ever seen but the technology inside them is far superior to most.


With this battery you get 1000 Cycles @50% DOC that is nearly twice as many cycles as the Victron battery above that only manages 600 Cycles @50% and that is a huge difference of about 2 years extra!

Rolls solar in our opinion make the best leisure batteries in the world are second to none and that why this battery has made our number one spot this week, these batteries are made well and made to last.


It is slightly heavier than the rest of the batteries in our TOP 5 list but who cares with such an awesome battery, these batteries are likely to give you a whopping 1400 Cycles at 50% and that is literally AMAZING.


These batteries have a recommended charging current of 23 amps and a maximum charging current of 40.2 amps so would work really well with the 30 amp Reongy B2b charger with solar MPPT built in or any 30 amp or 40 amp Solar charge controller
