Hi everybody, we're back with another really quick Chinese diesel heater post for you as there are always a lot of questions about the controllers, remotes and motherboards. It is no big secret that some of these heaters are supplied with better controllers than others which give you more control over the heater, your fuel and power consumption and are much easier to find tutorials for online. They can basically be broken down into two separate categories... The universal type and the dumb type.
DUMB CONTROLLERS
Basically the dumb controller and motherboard will only work together, if you tried swapping the controller with a random one you found on Ebay there is a good chance you will get error code 7 and they will not work together. The same would happen if you wanted to replace your motherboard and keep the controller you have. This is because the vast majority of motherboard and controllers that you can find on Amazon, Ebay, Aliexpess etc are a universal type. Another problem with the dumb type is being to find links to replace them if they do go wrong, some can be found (please see links below) but some are impossible to find. This means that if either your motherboard or controller need replacing you are probably going to have to replace both at the same time... And maybe the wiring loom As the dumb type controllers are made to only work with the motherboards they are supplied with sometimes the connection for the controller is different. So if you have a dumb set and the controller, motherboard or wiring loom get damaged be prepared to have to change all three as a worst case scenario at the cost of about £40 ish.
The dumb type also usually work completely differently to the universal type. They either have special functions that the universal type don't have or they use power setting instead of letting you pick a specific pump rate and using HZ. For example the new controller supplied with the Lavaner Pro 2kw Max is dumb as it has features that other heaters don't. So dumb doesn't always mean worse it just means not universal.
When it comes down to 2kw heaters the only real plug and play options are dumb controllers and boards. All the universal controllers in this post are specifically made for the larger 5kw units, the three blade controllers and Hcalory controllers I mention later in the post don't even have hidden settings menus so will not work at all on 2kw heaters at all. If you need a new controller or board for your 2kw heater please scroll down to the dumb controller section for a good option.

SIX BLADE UNIVERSAL CONTROLLERS
The universal type are much different to the dumb type, basically somebody has designed a good motherboard that can do pretty much everything you want it to do and then multiple controllers have been designed to work with it. This means that if you have a universal motherboard you can choose from multiple controllers from very basic rotary controllers to ones that let you have complete control over the pump speed and fuel consumption. If you are American you can even get one that lets you change from Celsius to Fahrenheit.
They have two different power modes automatic/temp mode and Constant power mode/HZ mode.
Being able to run your heater in HZ mode is very important if you want to be able to monitor exactly how much fuel you are using. There is a very simple maths equation you can use once you know the exact HZ rate you are running your heater on. The six blade universal controllers are the only controllers that still use HZ as one of its power modes.
Constant power mode/HZ mode on the universal controllers also allows you to have much more precise control over the heat that is coming out of the heater. As you can control the Exact HZ rate this means there are about twenty five different power settings. With some of the newer controllers we will mention later in the post there can be as little as five constant power settings so nowhere near as precise.
You can even upgrade to the afterburner controller with the universal motherboard and that gives you so many functions that you can't get anywhere else (except with the RM4 PRO) like multiple timers, wifi, etc. They are literally the best controller out there but can only be used on the universal motherboard. If your universal motherboard, controller or wiring loom break it is very easy to find a replacement without having to buy the full set. One problem you might run into though is depending on the heater some universal controllers might come with a different connector to the usual rounded triangle type. You can just buy a set of connectors and switch it or use an adapter.

The universal motherboards are very easy to find and you will have your choice of where to buy them from, you can even get them next day delivery on Amazon with prime if you need one really quickly. If you are not in a rush for it and want to save a few quid AliExpress is the cheapest option.
These motherboards are only really for 5kw heaters and are slightly too big to fit into 2kw comfortably, They will fit just about however you will need to adjust the settings for them to work properly with 2kw heaters, Please see links below...

As with all the universal bits and pieces the universal wiring looms are also very easy to find, the one you need depends on the controller connection. If you have a rounded triangle connector you will need one of these. The new Hcalory and Maxpeedingrods heaters now come with non universal connections for the control panel. If you need a new wiring loom for any of these heaters you will either have to get them direct from them somehow or just use a universal wiring loom and just change the 3 Pin connectors to a more common type.

SIX BLADE UNIVERSAL CONTROLLERS
This first one is probably the most common on the market but it is getting less and less common to find them supplied with heaters. We're not sure if it is a supply issue or if suppliers have moved away from them for good. Hcalory still supply them with a lot of their units and they are decent controllers with most of the functions available. They don't have plateau/high altitude mode, you can adjust the settings manually when you need too and we think that is better. You can't change the temp scale from Celsius to Fahrenheit like you can on some of the newer controllers, it doesn't have bluetooth, it doesn't have automatic on/off mode, the controller always stays fully lit and doesn't go into sleep mode and it can not be paired with the newer style LCD remote.
It can also only be paired to one remote at a time unless you use the specific clone versions of the remote then you can have multiple. Please see link below...

It does have HZ mode, timers, clock, hidden menu and a remote that will work with the Broadlink RM 4 PRO though so you can control it via WIFI or Thermostat if that is the sort of thing that floats your boat.
It is basically a very simple to use controller that does everything a normal user will need.

These next two universal controllers look very similar to each other and work very similar to each other too so I will do them both together. the only difference in functions we can find between the one with the spanner icon has the ability to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit. So one was obviously made specifically for the American market but without ruling out the rest of the world that have moved on.
You will find these two controllers supplied with quite a few heaters, including some Hcalory, Vevor, Maxpeedingrods, FlowerW (that's just Vevor again) and many others. There are also dumb controllers that look virtually identical to these controllers too so you need to be careful when buying them.
They do not have bluetooth, they do not have automatic on/off mode, the controller always stays fully lit and doesn't go into sleep mode. They do have HZ settings, they do have plateau mode, they have a hidden menu you can also adjust setting manually too, they have timers, they have a clock, you can pair the older style of remote to them (so you can use the Broadlink RM 4 PRO) as well as the newer LCD remote and the spanner one can be switched from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

This next controller is a universal controller but is is as basic as they come, you can literally turn them on and off or up and down. They do have a constant power and a thermostatic mode but both modes use number settings rather the celsius and Hz settings. They don't have a settings menu, they can't be paired to a remote, they don't have a clock or a timer, they are not bluetooth and they don't have the auto on off function. They are very simple to use though, they also use less power when the heater is off than other controllers as they are analogue not digital with an LCD screen. If you have any errors with this controller you have to count the amount of flashing lights on the controller. If there are four it is error code 4, if there are 8 it is error code 8 and so on.

There are a few other six blade universal controllers on the market but the ones above are the easiest to use, most common and useful. There is a slightly better one that is supplied with the Lavaner pro heaters but these are pretty hard to find for sale anywhere. The only real difference is the build quality... But it is better.
We couldn't find one for sale anywhere whilst writing this blog post so the best we can do for now is a photo and instruction manual...
THREE BLADE CONTROLLERS (NEW STYLE)
Although the older style six blade controllers (shown above) are the best in our opinion, it is getting harder and harder to find heaters supplied with them off the shelf. Most brands have started moving away from them and either supplying them with heater specific controllers and boards or with the newer style three blade controllers.
These controllers and boards work differently to the six blade controllers and the boards and controllers are NOT interchangeable with each other. They do have one decent function that the six blade controllers do not have and that is Plateau mode. This is a very handy function to have if you live at a high altitude or intend on traveling to them. When you are at a high altitude the air is much thinner and this plays havoc with your heaters very sensitive air fuel ratio. To compensate for this these controllers have Plateau mode and you just have to switch it on and your heater with automatically change the ratio for you. This makes things much simpler than the older style universal controllers above that you need to change manually in a secret menu following the charts below.
One bad point is because of the Plateau mode on these controllers and boards they have removed the ability to manually adjust the Pumps HZ rate the The fan RPM altogether. This is both a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. It is good because people who don't know what they're doing can't mess with important settings and adjust the very sensitive air/fuel ratio.
It is bad because people who do know what they're doing can't mess with important settings and adjust the very sensitive air/fuel ratio when it is actually needed. Also now they have removed the need to adjust the exact HZ rate and fan speed manually, they have stopped using HZ as a power mode altogether to make things simpler for the everyday user. We don't like this decision at all for three reasons. The first is you haver less control over the exact power of the heater. As mentioned above with HZ mode there were roughly twenty five different constant power settings. These have between five and ten so the precision is lost. The second reason is now it makes it pretty hard to work out the exact fuel consumption with simple maths.
And the third reason is they use more fuel on the lowest setting and can not be turned down as far. This is because the default lowest HZ rate on these controllers is higher than the default lowest HZ rate on the 6 blade controllers. So on their lowest power they use more fuel making them more expensive to run and produce more heat even when it has switched to low power to maintain the ambient temp. If you use one of these to heat a van you will already know why this is a big problem.
Although these controllers and boards are not the type we are talking about when we say UNIVERSAL they are in fact universal and there are a few controllers that will work with one motherboard. You do however need to be really careful when buying them as there are some three blade DUMB controllers that will not work with the motherboard.
THREE BLADE UNIVERSAL MOTHERBOARD
These motherboards and controllers have been very hard to find in the past but luckily they are much easier to get hold of now. Just like the six blade style you can find them on Amazon, Ebay and AliExpress.

DUMB CONTROLLERS
When it comes to dumb controllers and boards, these isn't many that we would recommend. Most of the good ones on the market are just supplied with decent heaters like the Lavaner Pro Max or the Maxpeedingrods Bluetooth models and are not available to buy as of yet. But there are a couple we can recommend with specific functions. Please see below.
A DECENT 2KW OPTION
FIVE BUTTON, THREE BLADE, SPANNER ICON
As we mentioned earlier when it comes to 2kw options there isn't that many options to choose from. The 6 blade motherboards don't fit comfortably and need a lot of tuning to work correctly in 2kw units and the three blade and Hcalory controllers are set to work with 5kw units and don't have a settings menu so you can't adjust the settings. This set is designed to work on any sized heater so the motherboard easily fits in the 2KW units. As it is designed to work with any size heater it has a very simple settings menu.
Once you are in you can tell it what size the heater body is and what dose the pump is and it will automatically adjust the settings so the heater works correctly. That is basically the whole settings menu but it is all it really needs.
They don't have HZ as a power mode but they do have a constant power mode with ten levels so more precise than the ones with only five levels.
As they are dumb you need to but the full set for them to work, they are not interchangeable with any of the other controllers or motherboards in this post. The only place we can find them at the time of posting is Ali Express...

If you want to be able to control your heater via your phone or set your heater to come on and off at certain temps a great option for you would be the HCALORY motherboard and controller as these can do exactly that. There is one downside though. If you live at high altitude or plan on traveling in high altitudes this is not the option for you. It doesn't have Plateau mode or Manual adjustments in a hidden menu.

When it comes to the remote controls for these heaters things are pretty simple. Most controllers work with the same generic remotes that use a 433mhz RF (radio frequency). The generic remotes that come with the majority of controllers will work on pretty much any controller, even some that are supplied with the LCD remotes. However you can not pair the LCD remote to any of the controllers that come with the generic 433mhz remotes.
All of the remote controls that work on the 433mhz frequency work with the RM4 PRO.

CLONE REMOTES
Most controllers on the make apart from a few, will only allow you to pair one remote to them at a time. There are a few exceptions like the dumb five button controllers with the spanner icons. If you want to pair more than one remote to your controller it is possible but you will need to use a clone remote instead. This only works with the remotes that use 433mhz but to be honest that is 90% of the remotes available.
Some look very similar to the ones supplied with the heaters but these work very differently. You first pair the original remote to the controller, then you clone it with the clone remote.
There are loads of option on the market as they are used for other things like electric gates, garage doors, curtains etc so there are some better looking ones to choose from too. STANDARD (433mhz)
