TOP 5 - LARGE AGM LEISURE BATTERIES FOR VAN LIFE 2021

Hi everybody, we’re back with another AWESOME TOP 5 blog post for you all and this week we have decided to tackle LARGE AGM leisure batteries.

By large we mean over 200ah


These sizes of batteries are perfect for full time van lifers, larger campers, van conversions, off grid systems, caravans etc either as a single battery for small simple applications or multiple batteries joined together in parallel to firm a bigger battery bank.


You could easily run a 12v compressor fridge, diesel heater, lights, TV, pump, sockets etc all year round with just one of these batteries, 400w of solar and a B2B charger!


WHY CHOOSE AN AGM BATTERY?


There are a few types options on the market when it comes to leisure batteries some are really cheap like flooded batteries and on the other hand some are really expensive like lithium (LiFePO4) but AGM are somewhere in the middle and probably the best choice for most van builds.


  • First of all the are sealed so you can keep them inside the van as they are not going to let off any dangerous fumes into the air.


  • They are also slightly lighter the flooded lead acid batteries for those of you concerned with saving a few KG’s of weight.


  • They have a longer life span than the cheaper lead acid batteries, when looked after correctly and charged correctly they will last you a lot longer than lead acid batteries.


  • And finally they are 100% maintenance free so no need to check their levels or top them up.




So here are our TOP 5 - LARGE AGM LEISURE BATTERIES…



5. LEOCH XTREME AGM DEEP CYCLE 260AH


In 5th place this week as usual is our AWESOME BUDGET OPTION the Leoch Xtreme AGM deep cycle 260 ah battery that is a perfect next step up from the cheaper lead acid batteries.


This battery is a whopping 260Ah so it will give you 130Ah of useable power from every charge, it has a maximum charging voltage of 60 amps so it will work well with higher power chargers like the Sterling 60 amp B2B charger

4. VICTRON ENERGY AGM DEEP CYCLE 220AH



Fourth on this weeks list is one of the biggest makes in awesome off grid equipment and that is the Victron energy 110Ah deep cycle battery.


Victron make some awesome equipment in general and when it comes to batteries they are up there with some of the best, this battery comes with M8 insert terminals so connecting things up couldn't be easier without the need for extra battery terminals.


These batteries are 40Ah smaller than the batteries above and have the same amount cycles @50% but are more expensive this is because the build quality and technology in them are so much better and if looked after correctly will last a lot longer that 600 Cycles and have been known to last 6 - 8 years


These batteries have a maximum charging rate of 60 amps so work well with the awesome 60 amp B2B chargers from Sterling and MPPT solar charge controllers up to 60 amps

3. VICTRON ENERGY AGM DEEP CYCLE 200AH X 2


In third place this week we have another offering from Victron and that is these batteries below, I say these instead of this as with this offer you get 2x 200Ah batteries for an amazing price giving you a huge 400Ah battery bank.


These batteries have been developed especially for telecom and marine use so are tall and thin rather than short and fat so they don't up much floor space making them perfect for campers and van conversions too.


Be aware that adding both of these batteries to your build will add a lot of weight too weighing 60kg each these are really only suitable for bigger builds, conversions or off grid systems.


They perform slightly better the Victron battery above with 750 Cycles @50% (but most likely a lot more) so that why it has made our number 3 spot this week.


When two of these batteries are joined together they will need a very powerful charger of 60 amp or 80 amp so would require a powerful solar set up and a Sterling B2B charger to keep these topped up

2. ROLLS R12 SERIES 2 AGM DEEP CYCLE 200AH


This weeks second place goes to this AMAZING 200Ah AGM battery by Rolls solar.


Rolls solar in our opinion make the best leisure batteries in the world are second to none and that why their batteries have made our number two and one spots this week, these batteries are made well and made to last.


It is slightly heavier than the rest of the batteries in our TOP 5 list but who cares with such an awesome battery, these batteries are likely to give you a whopping 1400 Cycles at 50% and that is literally AMAZING.


These batteries have a recommended charging rate of 40 amps and a maximum charing rate of 60 amps so they will work well with the 60 amp Sterling B2B charger, Renogy 50 amp B2B with built in MPPT and pretty much any 40 amp or 60 amp Solar charge controller.

1. ROLLS S12 SERIES 5 AGM DEEP CYCLE 290AH


In first position this week as mentioned above we have another AWESOME battery by what we consider make the best leisure batteries in the world and this one has a huge capacity.


This 290Ah battery is pretty much all anybody could need for a conversion or off grid camper all in one unit, with enough solar and a powerful enough B2B charger this battery could run pretty much everything you could need for a pretty extravagant van build with lots of electrics.


As these batteries are huge they do weigh a lot so are not the best option for smaller campers, build or conversions but for bigger builds that require a lot of power this is 100% the best option for a AGM battery.


Just like the Rolls battery above this awesome battery is likely to give you a whopping 1400 Cycles or above at 50% and that is literally AMAZING.


With a recommended charge rate of 50amps and a maximum charge rate of 80 amps these batteries will work well with the 60 amp Sterling B2B charger, Renogy 50 amp B2B with built in MPPT and pretty much any 40 amp or 60 amp Solar charge controller.
