How to get a decent TV reception in your van...

Updated: Jun 19, 2022

Hi everybody, we are back with another extremely quick post that we hope will be very helpful...

So another very common question we see a lot in facebook groups is what is the best solution for getting a decent TV reception in your van. We have all been there before, just found the perfect park up for the night and now it is time to chill out and watch some TV but all you get is a blank screen on any of the decent channels. This can be very annoying.

We hate annoying things so today we are going to cover HOW TO GET A DECENT TV SIGNAL IN YOUR VAN...

The first thing you need to know about digital tv antennas/aerials is that they work by line of sight, this means that having your aerial in your van is most likely to give you a very bad signal especially if you have a well insulated van. The best thing to do it to put it outside and get it as high as possible, this is why houses have them on the roof. As this is for a van the highest point has to be the roof.

Also as they work by line of site you are much less likely to get a signal in your van in a built up area or forest etc if you are a lot lower than everything around you so it is best to either get up high or move away from obstructions.

WHAT IS THE BEST ANTENNA/AERIAL FOR YOUR VAN.

In a house that never moves the best option is a focused directional antenna as the transmitter will always be in the same direction, if you look up at the antennas on houses on a street you will see which direction your nearest transmitter is as all the antennas on the street will be facing the same location.

In a van it is a little bit different as you will be traveling around and never know what direction your closest transmitter is. So for a van you are going to need an omni- directional antenna as it will search in all directions for a signal not just the direction it is pointing.

The best option for vans and campers is this amazing little thing. It doesn't look like much but it really is AWESOME and easily the best on the market...

Necvox Antenna Ant-536 Digital Freeview TV Aerial Caravan Boat Car Camping

These antennas are AWESOME and as I said above easily the best on the market for vans and campers. They have been around for years and consistently get awesome reviews and recommendations from anybody that has tried one and we totally agree with this. They are AMAZING!

First of all they are passive so require no power at all you just plug it into your TV and you are good to go.

The base has a heavy duty magnet in the base so it will stick to your roof and not move. You can even drive with these things stuck to your roof (within speed limits). This means you do not have to drill any holes in your roof eliminating the risk of leaks.

They are pretty cheap considering they are the best of the best (about £30)

And finally and in the words of Necvox "This antenna will provide you with an up lift in performance of approx. 3.5 x better than any other portable TV aerial on the market".

Beware of fake copies, lots of people have tried to copy these antennas and have not done a very good job of it. If it looks like the antenna above and does not say Necvox on it in big white writing it is not the genuine thing and will be nowhere near as good as the Necvox.

DON'T FORGET TO RETUNE YOUR TV

If you are in a van, camper, truck, boat etc there is a good chance that you are going to be moving around a lot and this means there is a good chance that you will have to retune your TV for the best signal once you have reached your park up. This can be annoying as it can take a while to do but unlike when you are at home and just need to tune the TV in once as it is always in the same location this is different with a van, it is the nature of the beast. So if you are in a new location or new park up make sure you retune your TV once your antenna is in place.

WHERE NOT TO PARK

Although these antennas are awesome they do have a few limitations so if a good TV reception is essential to you try to avoid valleys, heavily built up areas and forests/wooded areas. As these things rely on line of sight the higher you are with no obstructions the better.

Ok so that's about it from us today, we hope you all found it helpful.
