Awesome cooking solutions for your van

So after living in a van for a while one thing I have learnt is that cooking only on a gas hob with just a saucepan and frying pan can be very restricting. For this reason lately I have been looking at upgrading my kitchen all together and try to make it as versatile as possible so I can cook pretty much anything I can cook in a house. So if you are yet to build your van, in the process of it or are thinking the same thing as me this post is definitely worth a read. I have fond some amazing stuff.

So when I was thinking about how can I make my van kitchen more like a van kitchen the first thing I thought was i will need an oven. There is so much you can cook in an oven in fact with this little beauty here you could easily cook a Christmas dinner for 2. If you have room to build one of these into your van then I highly suggest it. Just make sure if you do build it into anything or under anything (even your ceiling) you will need to use some heat proof materials. Remember when cooking with a gas appliance in your van to always turn on extractor fans, open windows and vents and make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm in your van. Carbon monoxide alarms should be located near the top of your van.

It has one gas connection and is pretty much plug and play.

CanCooker JR-001

I know I said above that I was fed up of cooking on a hob with a saucepan but this is a saucepan with a difference. One of the limitations with cooking on a gas stove is the amount of gas you will use to prepare the meal, a casserole that takes 4 hours to cook will use a lot of gas. With the CanCooker you can do it in roughly 45 mins saving you a lot of gas. The good thing about it is there are lots of Youtube videos on how to use it and what to cook in it so you will never run out of new things to try. The basics are put veg at the bottom, meat at the top, season, and liquid like stock, beer or wine and cook on a low-med heat when it starts steaming cook for 45 mins and everything should be amazing.

If you're thinking an oven in your van is a major overkill but you would love to be able to healthier grilled food rather than just frying it all the time then maybe this could be an option for you. Most fold up into a little carry case as they are meant for camping outdoors originally but as long as you are well ventilated and have a carbon monoxide alarm its just as safe to use indoors as all other gas appliances. Even if you just use the grill for toasting bread from time to time its an upgrade on the double hob burner by itself and opens up a lot of new options to you.

PopBabies rechargeable portable blender

Ok so this one isn't strictly for cooking but you can use these for all sorts in the kitchen so i'm counting it. This can help add a lot more verity to your diet letting you enjoy smoothies, milkshakes, homemade soups and even protein shakes (if it is possible to enjoy them at all. It comes with a funnel that will come in very useful and an ice cube tray that wont. You can charge it up from any USB socket anywhere so doesn't rely on you having power in your van and the battery lasts for a few uses. One of the best things about this blender is that it's a bottle too, the bottom comes off and you can just drink straight from the top. You can also put it in your bag and take it with you for later. There is only one other portable blender i can find with a rating as good as this but it is £5 more expensive and the lid has a flip top rather than a screw top and I think that would end in tears.

NGT Toastie maker

Heres another amazing little gadget, if your stuck with only a stove top and are looking for something that could brighten up your meal times look no further. Who doesn't like a good toasted sandwich. With this you can cook them with ease directly on your stove top with no electricity needed. It also comes with a cool little storage case to stop it getting damaged and hopefully stop it rattling around in the back of your van every time you go over a speed bump or round a corner.

Multi sectioned Saucepan

Another limitation to cooking on a two burner hob is you can only use two pans at a time. With this pan you can cook four different things at the same time on just one burner. With my oven and this amazing little pan I will be cooking full on Sunday roasts in no time.

This set also comes with steaming and egg poaching inserts too and we think that is awesome.

Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto indoor stove top pizza oven

Heres an awesome little solution for those of you who only have a stove top would be one of these stove top pizza ovens. It has a stone inside that takes about 7 mins to heat up but then you can have fresh homemade stone baked pizzas ready to eat in about 4 mins each. This has a poor rating on amazon but don't listen to it at all I have tried a pizza made in one of these oven and I thought it was amazing. You can also use it to bake bread, cookies, quesadillas and other things according to a quick glance at the internet (don't hold me to it)

Multi sectioned frying pan

As I said before one of the limitations to cooking on a two burner hob is the lack of space. This coupled with the multi sectioned saucepan above will effectively enable you to cook 8 or even 10 different items at the same time with minimal washing up. This one is a decent size for a decent price. You might prefer to go for a cast iron one as they are better quality and heat more evenly but they will cost you in excess of £100 each

KitchenCraft Stove Top Waffle Iron with Non Stick Coating

For those of you with a bit of a sweet tooth this is defiantly right up your street, Just imagine fresh waffles whenever you like! This is very much like the stove top toasty maker and works in exactly the same way, you just fill it up, put it directly on your stove top, flip half way through and its done. Kitchencraft is a good make so you don't have to worry about quality. It's non drip so you don't make a mess when you flip it over, non stick and easy to wash. You can also buy bags and boxes of waffle mix to save on time, washing up and mess.
